Info
Known as Hadrian’s Tomb, the Castel Sant’Angelo is a fortress located on the right bank of the Tiber, walking distance from St. Peter ‘s Basilica. It was built as a mausoleum for himself and his family. It became a military building. In the year 590 , while a great epidemic of plague devastated the city, Pope Gregory I had a vision of Saint Michael the Archangel on the top of the castle, announcing the end of the epidemic. In memory of the apparition the building was crowned with the statue of an angel. It got turned in a castle of the Vatican so that the Pope could escape in case of danger. It’s an important Museum and I’ll tell you about Mastro Titta, the hangman of Rome. There’s an awesome view of Rome.
